Cylinders Reawakened: A Phonograph Listening Session

A phonograph with a brass horn playing a wax cylinder

Spend an evening with the earliest recorded sound, played back on the machines it was made for. We will hand-crank an Edison Home Phonograph and let a century-old wax cylinder speak for itself — surface noise, horn resonance and all.

Saturday 18 July 2026, 18:30 – 20:30 · The Sound Gallery, London

Each cylinder will be introduced with a short note on its origin, the artist, and the acoustic process that captured it. No technical background is needed; bring your ears and your curiosity.

The session includes:

  • Brown-wax and Blue Amberol cylinders, c.1900–1912
  • A live demonstration of acoustic (pre-microphone) playback
  • An open Q&A with the collection’s curator

Places are free but limited. Reserve a seat by emailing events@era.example.
