Grooves & Shellac: A 78 rpm Restoration Workshop

A technician working at an early disc-recording machine

A practical, hands-on day for collectors and archivists who want to get more from their shellac discs — safely. We cover cleaning, careful handling, stylus choice, and transferring a 78 to a clean digital file without stripping away its character.

Saturday 22 August 2026, 10:00 – 16:00 · ERA Conservation Studio

Working in small groups, participants will transfer a disc from start to finish and leave with their own restored file. All equipment is provided; you are welcome to bring one disc of your own to work on.

Topics include:

  • Wet-cleaning shellac without damaging the lacquer
  • Matching stylus profiles to groove width
  • Equalisation curves before the RIAA standard
  • Documenting provenance and metadata

Capped at twelve participants. A materials fee applies.
