Voices from the Horn: An Exhibition of Acoustic Recording

A Victorian crowd gathered around an early recording apparatus

From Edison’s tinfoil to the polished cabinet gramophone, this exhibition traces the first fifty years of recorded sound through the objects that made it. Machines, discs, cylinders, trade catalogues and studio photographs tell the story of an industry inventing itself.

5 September – 30 November 2026 · Daily 09:00–17:00 · Free entry

The centrepiece is a working acoustic recording horn, demonstrated on selected weekends, alongside loans from private collections rarely seen in public.

Highlights include:

  • An original Berliner gramophone, 1895
  • Early disc labels from across Europe and the Americas
  • A reconstructed acoustic recording booth

Guided tours run on the first Sunday of each month.
